It's only one week tonight until Boomstock 2012, a charity concert in memory and celebration of our dear friend Conor Shaw who sadly passed away on 30th April last year. Conor was an avid music lover and loyal supporter of local talent, and his inimitable dancing was a glorius fixture of so many concerts and nights out in Belfast. For those that knew Conor, this night offers a chance to celebrate this spirit and keep alive Conor's unwavering enthusiasm for musical and artistic endeavour. For everyone else, it's simply an evening of brilliant music.
Following on from the success of the first Boomstock held last August (£960 raised for Conor's favourite charity, Medecins Sans Frontieres!!), the Pavilion Boutique Bar will host an excellent crop of alternativelive acts (Mudbitch, Birthday Sex, Girls Names, Mikey Buff) and DJs (Steven Agnew MLA, Not Squares DJs) next Friday night (4th May). There will also be a one-time performance by The Kings of Carrot Flowers, a loving tribute to one of Conor's all-time favourit bands, Neutral Milk Hotel. Featuring ourselves, members of Not Squares, Fucking Roadtrip, and a raft of special guests, this promises to be a curious and hopefully enjoyable spectacle. And, as before, all money raised on the night will go to the Medecins Sans Frontieres charity.
Having just recovered from an amazing Saturday night supporting the frenetically sexy Logikparty at their Deformative album launch in the Red Barn Gallery, we are now dusting ourselves and strapping up again for another weekend of gigs. Tomorrow night we'll be supporting the formidable Desert Hearts in the Menagerie, along with our catch-a-dark-wave buddies Charles Hurts (who I happen to know have some special guests with them tomorrow). Blast off!
Then on Saturday, it's Record Store Day 2012. This celebration of record shop culture, independent retail, dissatisfaction with the served-up norm, and left-of-centre comaderie is something we are 100% behind in camp TMT. Plus it offers an opportunity to pick up some sweet wax. As part of the day, we will be playing at a record fair at the Oh Yeah! Centre in Belfast, along with some other fab local musical acts and DJs (including Tom McShane, Belfast Music Club, Kiana, Sad City, Deformative DJs and loads of others). There'll also be local music retailers and afficiandos setting up stalls for records and other delightful nuggets. Plus free beer!!! We strongly encourage you to come join us and moodily flick through record boxes, forensically searching for that elusive Jesse Garon and the Desperados 7". You know, like the old days....
With the annual pagan-restricted-licensing-hours holiday behind us it's time to get on with April's "Belfast Left-of-Centre Gig Festival 2012". This exciting event comprises two days (separated by a day in between) of wise-ass sounds from the fringes. Thursday night (12th April) sees our good buddies Blue Whale support our other good buddies Not Squares at Radar in the Queen's Student Union, along with Dublin-based elctro outfit White Collar Boy. Blue Whale put out their first snippet of their debut recordings last week, and it gives a pretty good idea of their frantic-yet-contained, colourful-yet-sharp musical stylings:
Meanwhile, Not Squares have been working on and recording some ace new material, which they just might treat us to on Thursday. This is a free gig, so you got no excuse buddy!
Then, on Saturday (14th April), we have the album launch of Dublin-based post-punk shamens Logikparty, with launch coordinates set for the origin of the universe and back. As we've already mentioned on here, we shall be assisting them on their space-time-continuum defying journey (i.e. support for the gig). This is apre-book only gig! That means you have to email deformative.rbg@gmail.com, and let them know you're coming. Doors are 10 snoops, but it's BYOB (no bottles). Zang! If you don't, here's what you might be missing:
"We can't call people without wings angels, so we call them friends" - That's you, that is!
Check out a pre-release stream of Logikparty's debut album below, 'Oh Cult!'. It's a blinder of caffeinated post-punk hooks, dancing out of shattered stained-glass. Or something to that effect. Certainly, it's right up our street and pounding on the front door. Come in, we say.
We'll be supporting the band at their Belfast album launch, on Saturday 14th April, in the Red Barn Gallery. This is a Deformative night, which translates as 'guaranteed awesome'. It is BYOB (no bottles), and if you want to come you must RSVP at deformative.rbg@gmail.com, or you'll only have yourself to blame. Places are filling up fast, so don't be a fool - do it now!K, love ya, bye!
In case you didn't notice on Bakebook, this Thursday we will be supporting Girls Names and Documenta at Radar in the students union at Queen's, Belfast. Radar is a free night and a great showcase for local and distal music. Plus, it's Girls Names' first show of 2012, so we're extra chuffed to be on the bill.
Also, if you're in Belfast on Thursday (29th), TMT's very own Claire Hall will be have work displayed as part of the debut show of a art new space, Satis House. Why not come to that and then join us at the Radar gig after? Done!
Logikparty are one of our favourite bands in Ireland right now, and on 6th April 2012 they will be releasing their hotly-anticipated debut album 'Oh Cult!' on White Plague Records. As part of the tour to support the album, they will be playing a Deformative night in the Red Barn Gallery, Belfast. Support comes from us and Deformative DJs. These nights are always hugely fun, special affairs, so if you want to come join the special fun, RSVP to the email address on the poster below. Do it!
This Friday we'll be playing our first live show of 2012 at The Jane Bradfords' album launch in the Bunatee Bar, Queen's Student Union in Belfast (Incidentally, this is their first show in quite some time too). The 'Bradfords were on BBC Across the Line last night doing a session and chatting about the gig, so have a listen and start getting yourself in a little frenzy. Plus, Tony Wright aka VerseChorusVerse is on the bill, so there will be something to suit all your multifarious moods.
For those who can't remember what TMT look and sound like live (which includes us), here's a clip from last summer at our Animal Disco show:
That's right! We're very excited about playing our first ever live radio session tonight on Blast 106.4 FM's Through the Wall show, with James MaGill. You can listen live to the programme from 7-9pm, here: http://www.blast106.com. Turn On, Tune In, and Cop Off to some tasty beats!
In other news, we're excited to announce that we will be playing at the Jane Bradfords' album launch on Friday 2nd March in the Queen's Student Union, along with Verse Chorus Verse. Details are on the poster below! This promises to be a really exciting night, and we think it would super swell if you came to join in the fun.
It's an emotional week in Belfast's 'left-of-centre' music community. Firstly, there was the wonderful news (finally) that our very own Girls Names will be playing this year's Primavera Sound in Barcelona (emotions: excitement, pride, little bit of jealousy). In the local parlance: Eeow! Up the 'Names! Goths in the sun ahoy!! :)
In other emotions (mainly: excitement [again], nostalgia, little bit of sad), on this Saturday night will fall the last ever Go Bang! club night, of which our very own C.Hall formed a primary constituent. It's always been a great night, and has hosted some exciting live acts from both near and very far. Too many to count extensively, but some personal faves include Hello Translinks, Ital, Last Days of 1984, JL Seagull, Patrick Kelleher, Birthday Sex. On Saturday, Sea Pinks - the summery Jekyll to Girls Names' brooding Hyde - will accompany the last curtain call. Before big party times!
